Don't let gluten get you down this holiday season. These buttery, gluten-free sugar cookies are perfect for decorating and sharing!

  • 1 Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup Shortening
  • 1/2 Cup Butter (softened)
  • 2 Teaspoons Gluten-free Vanilla
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 2 1/2 Cups All Purpose Gluten Free Rice Flour Blend (Betty Crocker has a version of this)
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Gluten-free baking powder
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1 Cup Powdered Sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons Milk

  1. Combine granulated sugar, butter, and shortening in a large bowl and blend until creamy and smooth.
  2. Add vanilla and eggs, blending well after each addition.
  3. Add flour, baking powder, and salt mixing well.
  4. Divide dough into two sections and shape each section into flat disks. Wrap each disk in plastic wrap and refridgerate until firm, approx. 1 hour.
  5. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Use rice flour blend to lightly flour working surface. Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut with 2 1/2 inch cookie cutters. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
  6. Bake 8-12 min or until edges of cookies are lightly browned. Let stand 2 min on cookie sheet and then place on cooling rack. Allow cookies to cool completely before frosting.
  7. To make glaze for decorating: Combine powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Use gluten-free food coloring to color as desired. Apply to completely cooled cookies and share!
